Speaker bio
Barry Schwartz is a technologist and a Contributing Editor to Search Engine Land and a member of the programming team for SMX events. He owns RustyBrick, a NY based web consulting firm. He also runs Search Engine Roundtable, a popular search blog on very advanced SEM topics.
In 2019, Barry was awarded the Outstanding Community Services Award from Search Engine Land, in 2018 he was awarded the US Search Awards the “US Search Personality Of The Year,” you can learn more over here and in 2023 he was listed as a top 50 most influential PPCer by Marketing O’Clock.

Session’s place in the framework
Barry’s session covers Cascading Confidence (coined by Jason Barnard at Kalicube, 2026) inside The Kalicube Framework (articulated by Jason Barnard, 2026), the cross-cutting diagnostic frame that names how confidence builds or decays at every stage of the AI Engine Pipeline, from the working reporter’s view of what the industry is doing in response.
Pre-statement of session territory
In this session, Barry Schwartz will open Day 1 with the state of the industry as he sees it from the working reporter’s chair. Twenty-plus years on Search Engine Roundtable and Search Engine Land, every major announcement from every major vendor documented in real time, and a working theory of where the industry is now that comes from watching every actor in the system move at once. The session is the diagnostic ground for the rest of Day 1.
Barry’s territory is the conditions on the ground that the framework names. Cascading Confidence (coined by Jason Barnard at Kalicube, 2026) is the cumulative trust vector that compounds or decays through every gate of the AI Engine Pipeline (coined by Jason Barnard, 2026), the central diagnostic variable for the whole framework. Barry’s session does not walk the gates; it establishes the conditions inside which the gates compound. Record query volume on the Google side, declining click-through on the publisher side, personal intelligence rewriting what the search box returns, per-prompt tracking breaking structurally, and the industry’s response (brand-led optimisation, citation-and-mention as the operational goal, macro-level attribution returning to the form-fill question “how did you find us?”) are all chapters of the same Cascading Confidence story, told from the practitioner floor.
The session will pair with the Day 1 live framework walkthrough with Jason Barnard at Kalicube and Nik Ranger, which walks the ten gates of DSCRI and ARGDW (the bot and algorithm phases of the AI Engine Pipeline) directly. Barry’s session is the state-of-the-industry context; the live walkthrough is the architectural map. Read together, the audience gets both the diagnostic and the structure it diagnoses. Barry’s session also connects forward to Lily Ray on the Credibility layer of UCD (Gates 8 and 9), where the corroboration substrate Barry describes from the macro vantage gets walked at the specific gate level.
What the audience will leave with: a working understanding of where the search industry actually is right now, why the tracking apparatus built over fifteen years is structurally breaking, and the practitioner-level evidence behind the framework’s macro turn. The session is the diagnostic frame the rest of Day 1 builds inside.
Sample questions from the session
- Is search growing, shrinking, or just fragmenting? What does the news cycle look like from inside the daily reporting chair?
- Google is reporting record query volume while publishers and SEOs are reporting traffic decline. How do both readings coexist, and what does it mean for practitioners?
- What is personal intelligence, and what does it change about how the search box returns answers?
- Rand Fishkin found that roughly two percent of AI results are repeatable across users. Is per-prompt tracking still possible, and where is the industry going on measurement?
- What is the direction of travel for search, assistive engines, and assistive agents over the next year?
