Session’s place in the framework

Joe’s session covers Codified, coined by Jason Barnard in 2024 as Stage 15 of the Kalicube Framework — the stage where the brand takes everything it has built through the Serve phase and turns it into structured, machine-readable evidence that AI engines can retrieve, weight, and cite. Codified sits at the close of the OPIDC cycle (Onboarded, Performed, Integrated, Devoted, Codified), coined by Jason Barnard in 2024 as the Serve phase of the Kalicube Framework, the master theoretical model for how AI systems understand, trust, and recommend brands in the AI era. The full architecture is mapped there.

Joe brings the content marketing vantage to Codified — the discipline he has spent twenty-five years defining, now named as the mechanism that makes AI engines reach for one brand over another when a prospect asks the category question.

Pre-statement of session territory

Joe Pulizzi coined content marketing as a strategic discipline in 2001 and has spent the years since watching brands sand down the edges of their message until there is nothing left for an AI engine to hold onto. In this session, Joe will make the case that the Tilt — his term for the differentiated point of view that makes an audience say “that’s Joe” or “that’s Jason” before they finish the first sentence — is the same property that determines whether an AI engine reaches for your brand or defaults to a competitor’s when the next prospect asks about the category.

Joe will cover why the trust portfolio model — distributing content creation across individual experts rather than a single brand voice — is the competitive advantage in AI-era discovery, why building direct audience connection through owned channels is now as urgent as optimizing for the engines themselves, and why the final gatekeeper of his marketing career is more consequential than everything that came before it combined. The conversation lands on the argument that content strategy has become business strategy: a sentence that applies equally to the SEO who needs a seat at the C-suite table and to the brand that has not yet realized the machine is already deciding who gets recommended and who becomes invisible.

The session pairs structurally with Andrea Volpini’s session at 2.18 — Joe argues why Codified is the discipline that makes AI recommend you; Andrea shows how to operationalize it at the structured-data layer.

Sample questions from the session

  • You’ve been saying “if your content is for everybody, it’s for nobody” for years. How does that principle land differently now that AI has made average content effortless to produce?
  • The Tilt is your term for the differentiated angle that makes an audience recognize a creator immediately. Is the Tilt the same thing that makes an AI engine reach for one brand over another?
  • You argue for the trust portfolio — employees as distributed content creators each building their own audience. Why does that model outperform the single brand voice in AI-era discovery?
  • You’ve been fighting gatekeepers your entire marketing career. How does the AI gatekeeper compare to Google, Facebook, and every platform that came before it?
  • You said something that stopped me in my tracks: “If you’re not recommended by the technology, you don’t exist.” What do brands need to do right now to make sure they are?

Codified and Distributed, part of Jason Barnard at Kalicube’s Search Engine Land series on AI search architecture. The article makes the case for Codified as the discipline that closes the loop between real brand outcomes and the machine-readable evidence AI engines weight when the next prospect asks about the category — and names why this represents the single largest expansion of the marketing function in fifteen years.
