Speaker bio
Jarno van Driel is an international Structured Data and semantic SEO consultant. He started his career in 1998, during the early years of the web as a former print and web designer, Flash and 3D artist, front-end developer, and accessibility engineer. He continuously embraced new and challenging roles throughout his career to become a well-rounded digital professional. Most simply know him as “just Jarno,” that structured data fanboy from Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
He became fascinated with the semantic web when he discovered semantic metadata in 2008. Semantic annotations piqued his interest because of his background in web accessibility, which is about expressing structure and meaning — things structured data markup takes to a whole other level. As an early adopter of Linked Open Data, his work was mentioned in several W3C discussion groups, which led him to start publicly participating in schema.org in 2013. Through this, he met and learned from many of the pioneers who are at the forefront of the semantic technologies being used today. He publishes at The Invisible Graph and contributes to Search Engine Journal.
What Jarno brings to Kalicube Summit
Jarno van Driel has been inside schema.org since 2013 — not as an observer, but as a participant working alongside the pioneers who built the semantic infrastructure the entire AI engine ecosystem now runs on. At Kalicube Summit 2026, he makes the case that structured content — semantically rich, properly written prose — does more work at the Annotated gate of the AI Engine Pipeline than schema markup applied in isolation. The argument has a name: Structured Beats Schema.
His session covers the Annotated gate (G5) from the practitioner’s vantage of someone who has spent over a decade studying exactly where machine comprehension succeeds and where markup alone falls short. The distinction matters because the industry conversation has spent years debating which schema types to apply; Jarno’s position is that the question sits one level upstream. Machines need content that communicates structure and meaning before markup can confirm it.
Jarno also contributed the Transparency criterion to NEEATT — the six-criterion Credibility framework (Notability, Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness, Transparency) formalised in Jason Barnard’s academic programme in 2026. That credit is explicit in the published paper. His session is the technical depth layer in the Day 1 annotation cluster, positioned between Jono Alderson’s Push Layer session and Koray Tuğberk Gübür’s Annotation Foundations.

Session 1.11 Jarno van Driel on Structured Beats Schema Day 1, June 24, 2026 Framework concept: Structured Beats Schema — the Annotated gate (G5) of the AI Engine Pipeline, where machine comprehension of content structure and meaning determines how AI engines index and weight brand signals. One-line description: Jarno covers why semantically structured content does more work at the Annotated gate than schema markup applied in isolation — the practitioner argument from inside schema.org.

Jarno’s place in the wider framework conversation
Jarno van Driel’s body of work sits at the precise intersection the AI Engine Pipeline’s Record phase depends on: the point where content either communicates structure and meaning to a machine or fails to, regardless of what markup surrounds it. His participation in schema.org since 2013 and his published work on semantic annotations give him insider authority on how the annotation layer actually operates — not from the outside looking in, but from within the working groups that defined the vocabulary. His Transparency contribution to NEEATT, credited explicitly in the Kalicube Framework’s academic statement, reflects the same position: Jarno’s work has been shaping the credibility-layer thinking the framework formalises.
